Bonfire is a series of abstract sculptural forms inspired by the bonfire as a motif that refers to society’s search for a sense of centre – the gathering of people in an instinctive longing for warmth, safety and community. Just as a bonfire is a source of light visible from afar, a point of reference and a signpost, so too is the osteria – a destination and a guarantor of comfort.
The sculptural compositions capture the process of transformation from raw Carrara marble, full of primal energy, into a smooth, tender, almost corporeal form brimming with organic tension and emotion – symbolising the transience, changeability of things and the cyclical nature of life, parallel to the physicality of fire. The flame is also a symbolic and formal development of the archaic, originally cultural idea of the hearth as a focal point for human needs.
